30 Day Movie Challenge Day 24: 90's movie

One of my all time favorite movies is PT Anderson's Boogie Nights. Every performance is pitch perfect and the 80's record recording sessions are some of the highlights of the movie. I've often wondered- what would Dirk and Reed's record have looked like if they had only raised the money to make the demo?

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 23- Worst Movie Going Experience

This isn't representative of one instance, but an amalgam of the many times I go out to the movie theaters in LA. For a city that is the most closely associated with Hollywood and film, theater goers here are very often incredibly disrespectful and can't seem to watch a movie without texting, chatting, or any number of annoying activities. As a film buff, it's incredibly sad to see the theater is no longer the sacred ground it used to be. Now it just seems people can barely tear themselves away from their phones for two hours. In addition to the ever-escalating prices, I fear the magic of going to the movies has been lost for many people. I hope we can find our way back before it's gone for good.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 22- B Movie Poster

For today's challenge, the idea was to make your own B-Movie poster. I chose to imitate the classic Irwin Allen style disaster pic that was really popular in the 70's, and load it with as many terrible butt jokes as possible. Gotta keep it classy. (Or is that gassy?)

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 21- Musical

Today's challenge was to draw a musical, so I decided to illustrate one of my favorites from childhood- West Side Story. I still am enormously moved by this movie, especially Natalie Wood's tearful scene at the end (50 year old spoiler alert). It really amuses me to hear that the two leads didn't get along at all during filming, which is kind of funny since I always thought they had great chemistry. I guess that's just good acting, haha.

Get to da Choppa! The Evolution of Arnold Schwarzenegger

As a young teen growing up in the 90's there was no better action star than Arnie. It seemed, (at least until Last Action Hero) he made one killer movie after another. He made so many great action films, I couldn't include them all, but I tried to hit the highlights. Which is your favorite Schwarzenegger movie?

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 20- 80's movie

This was a tough choice. As a kid of the 80's there are SO many good movies to choose from, but I decided to tackle one of my favorite 80's kid's movies: The Dark Crystal. This movie is so rich visually, it's a real joy to look at. I tried to be faithful to the brilliant character designs while giving it my own spin. Hope you like it!

Today's assignment was a ton of fun- draw a famous movie character as a zombie. So many possibilities, but I settled on Zomb-ET, lol.

Hey guys, for today's movie challenge, I chose a neo-noir, Sin City.

The Evolution of Superman

Hey guys, this year marks the 75th birthday of one of the first, and certainly most influential superheros of all time. It's no exaggeration when I say I've been a life long Superman fan. I watched the first two Christopher Reeve movies again and again as a kid, and knew them nearly verbatim.  My parents got me a set of Superman Underoos (if you remember those things), which I wore under my clothes to hide my "secret identity". I even carried my Kenner Superman action figure everywhere I went.
        As for this picture, I planned on doing this a few weeks ago for his official birthday, but I got tied up with other work, so hopefully better late than never. In a few weeks, Man of Steel opens, and I couldn't be more excited to see one of my favorite heroes back on the big screen. It'll be a bit strange without the traditional John Williams fanfare, and I'm one of those people who actually misses his red underpants. (Hey, I'm a traditionalist) From what I've seen from the trailers, it looks spectacular, and I can't wait to see what Zach Snyder has in store.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 17- Movie Duo

"How the fuck do you split a fuckin' car, ya dummy? With a fuckin' chainsaw?" One of my favorite movie duos has to be Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare from Fargo. These guys are so much fun to draw. :)

Why, hello there!

One of those drawings where I just sit in front of my computer without an idea and just start sketching, not sure what will come out. Most times I just chuck these right in the trash, but I like this little fish(?) thing.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 16- 70's movie

I don't know if any of you have seen this movie, but it is one of my all time favorites. Aguirre, The Wrath of God is a 1972 film directed by Werner Herzog, about a group of explorers searching for treasure in South America, while their leader goes slowly insane. In this illustration, I tried to show the jungle reaching out to ensnare Aguirre, as he loses what's left of his sanity. The style of this piece is a little different from what I usually do, but doing these movie challenges allows me to try different styles and approaches on a case by case basis.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 15- Funniest Movie

This was a tough one. There are so many hilarious movies, how do you just choose one? I went with an all time classic: Monty Python and the Holy Grail. That cute bunny is one vicious SOB.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 14- Movie Vehicle

    

As my last few movie challenges have been pretty morose, I decided to lighten it up a bit. For my movie vehicle, I chose the iconic AT-AT from Empire Strikes Back. I thought it would be funny to see a scene on Hoth after the Rebel defeat, when the Imperial forces were toasting their victory.

30 Day Movie Challenge Day 13: Foreign Language Film

For today's challenge, I chose Umberto D, one of my favorite movies, made by Vittorio De Sica in Italy in 1952. This is one of the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen, dramatizing an old man's struggle to just survive in the turmoil of post war Italy. It's well worth watching if you fancy a good tearjerker.
